Zanda, the base tor visits to the ancient Guge kingdom, has an incredible location. It's perched hisih above the Sutlej River against crumbling Cliffs - a patch of vivid green among the unrelentingly barren canyons. There are even real trees, the first in hundreds of kilometres. Zanda is a major Chinese armypost and there's a checkpoint at the bridge 5km before the entrance to town.

Tholing Monastery
Tholing monastery (admission Y80), founded by Rinchen Zangpo. was once Ngari's most important monastery complex. It was still functionning in 1966 when the Red Guards shut down operations. Unfortunately much of what survived the depredations of the Cultural Revolution looks likely to be destroyed in the current round of 'restorations'. Three main buildings survive within the monastery walls. You need to get a 20Y permit from the Zanda PSB (on top of the entrance fee) to visit Tholing.

Yeshe O's Mandala Chapel. The main building in the Tholing complex, Yeshe O's Mandala Chapel, was also known as the Golden Chapel and was built in the form of three-dimensinal representation of a Tibetan Mandala. Before destruction during the Cultural Revolution, the square main hall had  four secondary chapels at the centre of each wall. Figures of the deities were arrayed around the wall facing in towards a central image atop a lotus pedestal. All the images were destroyed, although many of the wall murals survived At the time of writing this chapel was closed to visitors tor renovations When it reopens, visitors should be able to see the main hall, an open corridor with shrines and chapels facing in towards the centre. Again the images in these rooms were all destroyed in the 1960s

Main Assembly Hall. The dukhang has fine wall murals showing strong Kashmiri and Nepali influences. Scholarly opinion varies on whether these date from the 13th and 14th or 15th and 16th centuries. Bring a powerful light of you want to inspect these well-preserved murals of deities and their consorts The main statue - here arc of the past, present and future buddhas. and there's also a footprint of Rinchen Zangpo.

Lhakhang Karpo. The blandly functional-locking exterior of the Lhakhang Karpo, or White Chapel, doesn't hint at the quality of the murals within. As with Yeshe O's Mandala Chapel, a great deal of restotation is taking place.

Outside the Monastery Walls. A few steps to the east of the monastery compound is the recently restored Serkhang chorten external stairway ascends the three levels of the chorten It's unclear what resemblancee the structure bears to the original Serkhang, which was totally destroyed. A similar chorten stands in total isolation just to the west of the town. To the north between the monastc compaund and the cliff face, which falls away to the Sutlej River below, are two long lines of miniature chortens..
